Sometimes subordination involves items at different levels on the Rank Scale. This is known as INDIRECT SUBORDINATION or RANK SHIFT ( [ ] ). Sometimes rank shift occurs within words, as in (13a) and (13b), where a PP is subordinated within a word, or (13c), where the subordinated element is a clause.
